    An impacted tooth simply means that it is "stuck" and cannot erupt into function. The maxillary (upper jaw) cuspid, commonly known as the eyetooth, is the second most common tooth to become impacted after wisdom teeth.

    Why the Cuspid Tooth Is Critical

    The cuspid (canine) tooth plays an essential role in the dental arch:

    • Strongest biting teeth with the longest roots of any human teeth
    • Guides your bite: designed to be the first teeth that touch when your jaws close together, guiding the rest of the teeth into proper alignment

    When Does Impaction Occur?

    Most of the time, maxillary cuspid teeth are the last of the "front" teeth to erupt into place, typically around age 13. When a cuspid tooth becomes impacted (usually identified by the orthodontist during routine evaluation), every effort is made to guide it into its proper position in the arch.

    Common signs of impaction include:

    Treatment: Surgical Exposure & Orthodontic Eruption

    The technique to aid eruption is straightforward, performed in close coordination with the patient's orthodontist:

    Step 1: Surgical Exposure

    The gum tissue overlying the impacted canine is lifted to expose the hidden tooth. A small orthodontic bracket and gold chain are bonded to the exposed tooth.

    Step 2: Guided Eruption

    The orthodontist attaches the chain to the braces and applies gentle traction over several months. The impacted canine is slowly guided into its proper position in the dental arch.

    Step 3: Final Alignment

    Once erupted, the orthodontist completes final alignment and bite adjustment. The result is a naturally positioned, fully functional canine tooth.

    • The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation
    • Recovery involves 3-5 days of mild swelling and discomfort
