Pre-Surgical Guidelines
Please read and follow these instructions carefully before your procedure. Compliance with these guidelines is essential for your safety and a successful outcome.
Critical Warnings: All Procedures
Cannabis / Marijuana: STRICTLY PROHIBITED
Do not use cannabis or marijuana in any form (smoking, vaping, edibles, oils, CBD products, or topicals) for at least 48 hours before any surgical procedure. Cannabis interacts with anesthesia medications, increases heart rate and blood pressure unpredictably, can cause dangerous airway complications, and may significantly increase bleeding risk during surgery. Failure to comply will result in immediate cancellation of your procedure and a last-minute cancellation fee.
Tobacco & Nicotine Products
Do not smoke cigarettes, cigars, vape, or use any nicotine products for at least 24 hours before and 72 hours after surgery. Smoking severely impairs healing, increases infection risk, and can lead to dry socket after extractions.
Medications & Supplements: Please Inform Our Office
Do NOT stop any medications on your own. Please let our office know if you are taking any of the following so Dr. Krajekian can provide specific guidance for your procedure:
- • Aspirin (Bayer, Bufferin, Ecotrin) or aspirin-containing products
- • Naproxen (Aleve)
- • Blood thinners (Warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Plavix)
- • Vitamin E, fish oil, omega-3 supplements
- • Herbal supplements: ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginger, turmeric, St. John's wort, ginseng
- • Energy drinks or caffeine supplements
Tylenol (Acetaminophen) and Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) are generally safe to take before surgery.
Notify Our Office Immediately If:
- • You develop a cold, flu, fever, or sore throat before your procedure
- • There are any changes in your medical history or medications
- • You are or may be pregnant
- • You have been diagnosed with a new medical condition
Instructions by Anesthesia Type
Eating & Drinking
- Eat a normal, light meal before your appointment (do NOT come on an empty stomach)
- Stay well hydrated. Drink water before your visit
- Avoid excessive caffeine on the day of surgery
Medications
- Continue taking all routine prescription medications unless specifically instructed otherwise
- You may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) before your appointment if needed
- If prescribed a pre-operative antibiotic, take it exactly as directed
Day of Procedure
- Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time
- Brush and floss your teeth before arriving
- No escort or driver is required. You can safely drive yourself home
- You may return to work or light activities the same day
Day-of-Surgery Checklist
Before Leaving Home
- •Brush and floss your teeth
- •Take only approved medications with a tiny sip of water
- •Wear comfortable clothes with short sleeves
- •Remove jewelry, piercings, contact lenses, nail polish
- •Do not wear makeup or lipstick
- •Leave valuables at home
- •Confirm your ride/driver is available
Bring With You
- •Valid photo ID (driver's license or passport)
- •Insurance card(s), dental and medical
- •Any required co-payment or payment
- •List of current medications with dosages
- •Pre-operative clearance forms (if required)
- •Referral letter (if applicable)
- •A responsible adult driver (for sedation/general anesthesia)
