Critical Initial Recovery
First 48 Hours
- •Apply ice packs: 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off
- •Keep head elevated at 30-45 degrees at all times
- •Take all prescribed medications as directed
- •Liquid diet only - use a syringe or spoon for feeding
- •Jaw will be banded or wired - do not attempt to open
- •Keep wire cutters accessible (for emergencies only)
- •Rest completely - no physical activity
Early Healing Phase
Week 1-2
- •Continue liquid/pureed diet
- •Swelling peaks around days 3-5, then gradually decreases
- •Bruising may extend down neck and chest - this is normal
- •Take all medications until completed
- •Gentle range of motion exercises as instructed
- •Keep incision sites clean and dry
- •Attend all follow-up appointments
Progressive Rehabilitation
Weeks 3-6
- •Bands/wires may be removed or adjusted
- •Begin soft food diet as directed
- •Physical therapy exercises increase
- •Jaw opening gradually improves
- •Return to light activities
- •Stitches removed if non-dissolvable
Full Recovery
Months 2-6
- •Continue physical therapy as prescribed
- •Gradual return to normal diet
- •Jaw function continues to improve
- •Regular follow-up appointments
- •Report any clicking, popping, or pain changes
- •Full recovery typically 3-6 months
